Why n8n
After evaluating Make, Zapier, and custom code solutions, we settled on n8n as our workflow engine. The reasons:
- Self-hostable — Critical for clients with data sovereignty requirements
- Visual debugging — Every execution is inspectable, making AI pipelines transparent
- Code nodes — When visual nodes aren't enough, drop in JavaScript
- Webhook triggers — Instant integration with Telegram, Slack, and web apps
Pattern 1: Research → Generate → Validate
Our most common pattern. Used in the Media Comment Generator and Case Study Generator.
Trigger (Telegram/Webhook)
→ Perplexity Research Node
→ Claude Generation Node
→ Validation Node (format check)
→ Humanization Node (optional)
→ Delivery Node (Telegram/Google Docs)
The key insight: separate research from generation. When you let an LLM both research and write, it tends to hallucinate. By using Perplexity for grounded research first, then passing those facts to Claude for writing, you get dramatically better accuracy.
Pattern 2: Async Job Queue
For workflows that take more than a few seconds, we use an async pattern:
- Webhook receives the request and returns immediately with a job ID
- The workflow runs asynchronously
- Results are pushed to Supabase (for dashboard display) and Telegram (for notification)
This keeps the user experience responsive even for workflows that take 30+ seconds.
Pattern 3: Multi-Model Pipeline
Different AI models excel at different tasks. Our SEO Agent uses three models in sequence:
- Perplexity — Gathers current search data and competitor content
- Claude — Performs semantic clustering and content strategy
- GPT-4o — Generates structured JSON output for schema markup
Error Handling
Every production workflow includes:
- Retry nodes with exponential backoff for API failures
- Error branches that notify the team via Telegram
- Input validation before expensive AI calls
- Output length checks to catch truncated responses
Monitoring
We track three metrics for every workflow:
- Execution success rate — Should be >98%
- Average execution time — To catch performance regressions
- AI output quality — Sampled manually, weekly review
These metrics feed into our Marketing Workspace dashboard, giving the team visibility into the health of every automation.
